At the Ministerial Meeting between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held in New York on 24 September, Foreign Ministers from both regions highlighted the valuable work of the EU-LAC Foundation in deepening bi-regional ties.
In this way, the joint statement issued at the end of the meeting reflected the significant support of both regions for the organisation’s role as a key instrument of the partnership between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The meeting also advanced preparations for the upcoming CELAC-EU Summit, to be held on 9–10 November in Santa Marta, Colombia. The Summit is expected to consolidate progress achieved in the bi-regional relationship, particularly with regard to the green, digital and social transitions, as well as to jointly promote shared priorities such as the defence of democracy, the reform of multilateralism, and an international order based on rules.
The Ministers underlined the importance of continuing to enhance cooperation in matters of public security and the fight against transnational organised crime. The Ministers also advocated for strengthening cooperation in the areas of climate action and energy transition, regional interconnections, digitalisation, food security, health self-sufficiency, social justice and inclusion, gender equality, education, science, and technology.
The EU-LAC Foundation participated in the meeting as an observer, reaffirming its commitment to continue fostering dialogue and cooperation between the two regions in support of a partnership firmly committed to multilateralism. The organisation has accompanied the Summit process through the development of a strategy focused on the articulation of agendas, the production of substantive inputs, and the promotion of multi-stakeholder dialogue.
