LAC HERBST

The ‘Latin American and Caribbean Fall’ is a festival that annually promotes multiculturalism in Hamburg. Its rich programme of events showcases the social and cultural expressions of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Launched in 2014, this is the only festival in the city that focuses on that region.

The ‘Fall’ is an initiative of the Hamburg Senate and the accredited LAC consular corps. Since 2017, at the request of the organisers, the EU-LAC Foundation has taken on the role of coordinating the programme's activities.

We have all enjoyed the distinctive culture of Latin American and Caribbean, especially its gastronomy, music, literature and traditions. The LAC Fall festival is about sharing a multicultural experience with everyone in Hamburg. It exemplifies the capacity of this city to welcome newcomers as its own. It also showcases a community that has adapted to the works and secrets of Hamburg, contributing to its economic and social well-being.

The festival focuses on making the cultural diversity and richness of Latin America and the Caribbean more visible. But its roots go beyond. It provides a platform for mutual exchange and encounter. In times of increasing inner and outer threats to our peace and stability, we must hold firm to what connects us, namely the shared values between Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Germany and the city of Hamburg

I dare say that the Latin American and Caribbean Autumn is a festival that has become part of this great Free and Hanseatic City. It has contributed to increase its multiculturalism and to respect its diversity. This event is a demonstration of the capacity of this city to receive and welcome foreigners as one of its own. It is also the proof of a community that adapts to Hamburg's works and secrets and contributes to its economic and social well-being.

The Latin American and Caribbean Fall Festival is an open door to connect not only among ourselves but also to create a bridge of openness towards the city of Hamburg, which not only welcomes us, but also becomes our new home. I have been part of the festival for ten years and I can only say that I am very excited to be able to show, from a space of interculturality, respect, acceptance, our enterprises and resources as migrants who contribute with our presence here in this city, to build a better society.

It has been a wonderful experience and we have learned from the exchange, the information, with all the participants from both Latin America and Europe. It has enriched us a lot.

The festival helps us all to come together and discover other local histories, to recognise the diversity of personal stories and to accept the complexity of historical experiences and cultural and linguistic identities.

For me it has been a good fortune to be able to experience this Latin American and Caribbean Fall Festival at first hand since its foundation. The festival is an excellent idea to bring together all the events related to the Hispanic world, the Latin American world here in this Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

The Latin American Fall is a very important event for us and also for Hamburg, on the one hand to raise awareness in the museum of the events we organise with our Latin American partners here in Hamburg, but also to continue networking. And in this collaboration, we can look back on a long series of successful and exciting joint events, including concerts, film evenings, theatre performances, exhibitions and, of course, our annual events for the Mexican Day of the Dead.

The festival fulfils the objective of making the cultural diversity of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries of the world visible for a few weeks. It is therefore the result of an international collaboration that speaks volumes about the harmony and understanding between our countries, united by cultural and linguistic ties.

LAC Herbst Festival 2023

10 years together

As 2023 is the tenth edition of the Fall Festival, the theme is ‘10 years together’. This edition aims to celebrate this decade with a wide range of creative activities, such as music, literature, theatre, poetry, art, film and more, and to give prominent recognition to the creativity and contribution of migrant communities in Hamburg and Germany.

LAC Herbst 2022

Speaking Languages - Communicating Cultures

As in previous editions, the Fall activities were articulated around a specific theme. The theme for 2022 was ‘Speaking Languages - Communicating Cultures’, which aimed to highlight the richness and validity of languages as a factor of encounter, communication and respect for social and cultural expressions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Myths and National Narratives

As in 2020, the 2021 ‘Latin American and Caribbean Autumn’ Festival, under the thematic umbrella ‘Myths and National Narratives’, was heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this sense, 27 of the 49 activities of the Festival were carried out in virtual format. The other 22 events could be held in person at 19 locations in the city of Hamburg.

Artistic production and cultural exchange in times of COVID-19

The 2020 edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Autumn Festival was organised under the motto ‘Artistic production and cultural exchange in times of COVID-19’. The pandemic not only influenced the theme of the Festival, but also the Festival itself, as 19 of the 52 events had to be held in a completely virtual format.

Science and Knowledge

The 2019 edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Autumn Festival was based on the theme ‘Science and Knowledge’. Surpassing the scope of previous editions, in 2019, the Festival consisted of 90 events, with the participation of 65 organisations.

Women's Inclusion and Participation

The Festival was attended by 16 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean, namely Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Bolivia, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Cuba. These countries, together with Germany, Portugal, Spain and Israel, and 34 civil society associations managed to organise a total of 86 events. The EU-LAC Foundation participated in seven events, including the Opening Ceremony and Conferences on, for example, ‘Decolonising one's own culture?’

Migrants and Travellers

In 2017, the EU-LAC Foundation coordinated for the first time the ‘Latin American and Caribbean Autumn’ Festival. The Festival consisted of 73 activities. Mexico, with a total of 15 activities, was the country with the highest contribution of events. Other countries participating in the Festival were Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Bolivia, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba.
