IV EU-LAC Journalists Forum

The EU-LAC Foundation, along with the Gabo Foundation, organises the IV EU-LAC Journalists Forum ‘Bi-regional Context and the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Investigative Journalism’, a learning and exchange space that promotes bi-regional dialogue among investigative journalism professionals from Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union. The frame of the event is the 13th Gabo Festival, considered the main meeting for Ibero-American journalism.

The goal of the Forum is enhancing the agency capacity of investigative journalists in a space where they can share their analysis techniques and methodologies, addressing the bi-regional context of the journalism activity, as well as case studies where they exchange advanced methodologies, tools, learning insights and the best experiences of investigative journalism among colleagues from both regions, focusing on the impact of technology and AI.

For this purpose, the Forum will consist of two main components:

  • Panel - Challenges of investigative journalism in Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union. The socio-political and technological ecosystems, in particular AI, that frame and impact investigative journalism on both sides of the Atlantic will be discussed, as well as the strategies developed by journalists to implement their investigations despite these challenges.

The panel is open to the general public. Please register through the following link to confirm your attendance: https://festivalgabo.com/#registro

  • Learning exchange - Investigative journalism and Artificial Intelligence. Three case of studies from Latin America, the Caribbean and the EU will be presented, illustrating the technological impact on investigative journalism, with emphasis on AI, the challenges it imposes and the benefits it brings to journalistic activity, as well as tools for reporting and unravelling the impact of AI systems and their incidence on decision-making and the implementation of public policies. (In this space attendance is by invitation only).

By connecting professionals with diverse careers but shared goals, the Forum aims to impulse a more thorough investigative journalism, able to address complex dynamics at a bi-regional level, providing a direct impact on the information quality received by European, Latin American and Caribbean societies. The obtained conclusions and recommendations will be used to feed into the agenda of the CELAC-UE Summit 2025.
