What is at stake at Rio+20? Recommendations from Brazilian and EU civil society

The sixth edition of the Roundtable of the Civil Society of Brazil and European Union, organized by the Economic and Social Development Council (CDES) of the Presidency of the Republic and by the European Economic and Social Committee (EECS) on June 19 2012, will address the theme “What is at stake at Rio+20? Recommendations from the civil society of Brazil and the European Union”.

The Roundtable is a permanent platform of dialogue and cooperation between the civil societies of Brazil and European Union. It aims at contributing to reinforce relations between Brazil and the European Union in the context of the Strategic Partnership instituted in 2007. The conclusions of the Roundtable will be forwarded to the Chiefs of State and Government, in the context of the Summit meeting of Brazil and the EU. During this meeting, which precedes the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio+20, a Joint Report will be presented for the first time, expressing the maturity of the dialogue between these two institutions and the relevance to the theme of sustainable development.

In the afternoon of the same day, CDES is organising a Meeting between civil society representatives of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and of the European Union on 19 June 2012. The background of the event is the importance of the conference topic to the peoples and the strategic position of the countries and of the bloc in the context of the promotion of sustainable development.

The Meeting converges with a series of initiatives organized by CDES and other similar institutions towards gathering civil society of the BRICS countries. The objective is contributing to mutual comprehension in order to search for convergences and broaden cooperation possibilities.
